Course Description
Welcome to JPN 3053, a course in Business Japanese for the intermediate-high level to the advanced level non-native learner of Japanese. This course introduces four business cases in Japan, specifically Coca-Cola, Nintendo, Coach, and Toyota. Students learn successful business models and conduct a cross-cultural analysis by focusing on “localization”. Interactive activities/tasks/projects designed to practice students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, communicative, and interactive skills will improve their global competency and interculturality. Students will also improve their Japanese language proficiency and master more complex grammatical structures through practical application of both written and spoken Japanese.
Upon successful completion of this course, you should improve interculturality and global competency. In particular, you should:
1. Have knowledge of successful Japanese businesses, including their history and strategies;
2. Expand your knowledge about Japanese companies and their products;
3. Identify strengths and weaknesses of Japanese marketing strategies;
4. Compare the differences and similarities of marketing strategies between the U.S. and Japan.
You should also improve Japanese proficiency in the following areas:
1. Expand business-related vocabulary;
2. Improve presentational and communicative skills in Japanese;
3. Increase reading proficiency to an advanced level by visiting Japanese website;
4. Improve public speaking skills in Japanese.
