Course Description
We will learn about issues of Japanese social justice from Japanese films themed on LGBTQ, ethnic minorities, prejudices toward diseases and occupation, and gender inequity. Students engage in group discussions and reflections to remove cultural filters and strengthen their intercultural competency skills that are necessary for today's workplace. The films increase students' knowledge of the Japanese culture in general but they also build up cultural self-awareness, cultural worldview, empathy, verbal and nonverbal communication, curiosity, and openness.
It also gives students a cursory introduction to Japanese cinema that will inspire them to explore and view more Japanese films on their own.
NOTE: JPN students will complete reading and writing assignments in Japanese as this course (JPN 4213) counts towards upper-division language credit. JPN students are encouraged to make an appointment with me for help or review.
