A student’s comment from CSH1213 Introduction to Japanese Culture Through Anime (Spring 2022)
I absolutely loved this class. The content was extremely interesting and taught me to really think about culture. How it affects every aspect of life, from meals to media, to government. The class not only taught me about Japanese culture but how to look at things and evaluate them with a cultural lens. To look at aspects of culture and how it shapes society. It was really eye-opening, and this class provided the tools needed to do the same with other cultures. Professor Fukuda was an amazing instructor, allowing time for students to discuss and share ideas. The lectures were engaging and informative. I really enjoyed my time in class. I also loved movie nights; they were a great addition to the class. This was such a great class, and I would highly recommend it to any student at UTSA.

I have never done a presentation in Japanese or a foreign language in general, and when I first started this class I was so nervous, but through Fukuda Sensei's instruction I became confident in myself and pushed myself in this language class in a way that I have never done before. I had a lot of fun and learned many things.
A student’s comment from JPN 1014_005 Elementary Japanese (Fall 2021)
This course exceeds the high expectations I initially had for the class. It allowed me the opportunity to properly organize my learning in a structured educational environment. As an introductory course for Japanese, this course helped me better understand the basic structures of sentences and how to communicate in this language. Between the textbook, lectures, vocabulary, and assignments given, this course provided an ample amount of resources for me to access both inside and outside of the classroom which allowed me to continually practice the material in a real-world setting. As for the instruction of the course, Professor Fukuda taught the subject remarkably. The instructor treated each student with a high level of respect and greatly encouraged our participation in the class. Her instruction was very organized and easy to follow, and it allowed me to clearly grasp the information that was being taught. The homework, quizzes, tests, and other assignments given were fair and allowed a reasonable time period for students to complete them. Lastly, Professor Fukuda was exceptional at motivating students to take an active role in their learning. Between her comprehensive knowledge of the language and her enthusiasm for sharing that knowledge in fun ways that students could easily relate to and understand, Professor Fukuda's instruction granted me an extraordinarily positive experience that in turn made it possible for me to excel at this course. My respect and my gratitude for the course and Professor Fukuda are beyond words could say. Overall, my interest and enthusiasm for Japanese have greatly grown because of this course, and I would highly recommend this course and instructor to any student wanting to study the Japanese language.

I found this to be an excellent course taught by an exceptional instructor. This course was challenging in a way that furthered my understanding of the Japanese language in such a short amount of time. Between the homework assignments, quizzes, readings, and listening practices, this course offers various resources for studying the course material outside of class as well. This instructor's Japanese instruction was paced well in a way that was moderately easy to understand at the course's intended language level. This instructor also offered a great amount of extra-credit opportunities that all included engaging activities to learn more about the class contents, such as language or cultural aspects relevant to what is being taught in the classroom. The final project for this course was moderately fair as well and promoted a significant level of cooperation and communication between classmates. Overall, this was an outstanding course that I am grateful to have been a part of, and I would greatly recommend the course and instructor.

The course is very clearly structured and progresses at a good rate. The workload is challenging without necessarily being overwhelming. By the end of each semester with Fukuda-sensei, I feel like I have made meaningful progress in my Japanese language skills. Fukuda-sensei is always prepared, gives a lot of helpful tips, and points out areas of improvement without discouraging students. No class time is ever wasted.
